This past weekend, the SwiftVERE team ruffled feathers at the much-anticipated Prestige Hooked-Bill Bird Auction on behalf of Kiepie Herholdt.

With 117 lots on offer, the auction was a bird lover's paradise, featuring an array of rare mutations of Alexandrine Parakeets, Ringnecks, Slatyheaded Parakeets, Plumheads, and Moustache Parakeets.

One of the standout moments of the auction was the sale of the highest-priced bird, a stunning lot that fetched an impressive R450,000!

Lot 100, a Spangle greygreen/blue Alexandrine Parakeet is the first of its kind in South Africa. This moment not only underscored the rarity and desirability of these exquisite birds but also highlighted the passion and dedication of the individuals who attended the auction.

Interestingly, the South African market for Ringneck Parakeets faces a unique challenge. With stringent regulations requiring permits for ownership and the export of these birds, the market demand is relatively low. Despite the hurdles, the Prestige Hooked-Bill Bird Auction served as a platform to educate and inspire enthusiasts, fostering a deeper appreciation for the species. The Moustache birds, another star of the show, proved to be both highly-priced and not easily accessible to the average South African enthusiast.
